Victoria Foster recently graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Crafts and a minor in Business Administration at, Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. She concentrated in weaving, with explorations in sculpture and textile studios. She creates a combination of tapestries, utilitarian objects, wearables, and sculptural pieces that include, furniture, and hanging assemblages. Victoria’s wearables are uniquely their own by use of techniques such as weaving, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and felting. Her creations focus on vibrant colors, textures, or a combination of the two, with a push towards sourcing sustainable materials and found objects. She was recently awarded the Bierman Scholarship for women artists and will be working alongside Marilynn Cowgill, an experienced weaver in the year of 2022. She was also recently accepted for the Visual Arts Senior Exhibition and the Best of 2022 Exhibition in the summer, at Miller Gallery in Kutztown, PA.
The impetus of my work is to combat the excessive waste that industrialization produces in our society. I do this by focusing on sourcing materials ethically and using found objects and “waste” within my work. These materials include thrifted textiles, furniture, found metal, plastic and naturally occurring materials. I use my skills in weaving, sewing, and dyeing (both natural and synthetic), to craft one of a kind textile fashion and wares for the home. Within sculpture, I combine my fiber expertise with my skills of woodworking, blacksmithing, small metals, mold making, and ceramics that expand my creativity outside of fiber art.
I create artwork that involves long repetitive processes such as the set up of a floor loom, the hours it takes manipulating the threads individually, knitting and crocheting intricate patterns, and other laborious tasks. I focus on color and texture and use resist techniques of woven shibori to dye my fabric. I combine my childish love for bright colors with the natural color palettes of the outdoors, in combination with my love of for the vintage and thrifted.
I am constantly inspired by my environment and let my thoughts, feelings, ideas and actions create an interconnected web of inspiration. I use colors and textures that are nostalgic to me, like bright blue and oranges, and connect to the color palettes that speak to me now that are more natural. I use soft and fluffy textures for the feminine side of my identity and hard, rough textures for the masculine side. My art is where I explore the deeper parts of myself through the color and texture within my weavings and the freedom I have within the materials of my sculptures.
